The most important book you'll buy is Al Overton's Early Half Dollar Die Varieties. Pictures and attributions for all 500+ Overton varieties.

Most serious collectors prefer the 3rd Edition, but it may be difficult to find as it is out of print. Donald Parsley's 4th Edition is easier to obtain. 

Bust Half Fever by Edgar E Souders is an excellent book for both the beginner and the expert. 

Not much information on individual varieties - but everything else you need to know to catch the fever!
